Every river runs across the face of the Earth like a tiny stream of water beading together on the windshield of a car. Water caresses the brown Earth gently and helps shape and mold it. Water is the one of the two engines that nature uses to change the shape of the planet, wind being the other engine. Heat and cold drive the engines, causing water and air to expand and flow. Gravity is a collection of small forces working together to bind objects closer to each other. When the universe has grown old and barren, and the last star has long since burned out, all matter will collect into more and more black holes. The darkness will be empty and devoid of anything useful but eventually the black holes will radiate away their mass in the form of heat that only gradually escapes the black holes. At the end of time, the last action the universe takes will be the final dissipation of the last black hole into heat that will simply coexist with other heat. |
